Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, recently highlighted a startling reality: if a company pays a software engineer $500,000 a year, they should be spending at least another 250,000 just on the electricity and infrastructure to run the AI that supports them. As techgiants like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft commit over 660 billion this year alone to AI infrastructure, the world faces a critical bottleneck: we simply do not have enough cheap, clean, and reliable power to fuel this revolution.

Surprisingly, the solution might lie in a small, landlocked nation in the Himalayas: Nepal.

Nepal Could Power the AI Revolution. Here’s What’s Stopping It

Nepal has 83,000 megawatts of untapped hydropower. Cold Himalayan climate. Surplus electricity that has nowhere to go. And a geography sitting between India, China, and Bangladesh – three of Asia’s largest AI user populations.

The Asset: 83,000 Megawatts of Untapped Power

Nepal sits on a goldmine of 83,000 megawatts of untapped hydropower potential, with 43,000 megawatts identified as economically feasible. For decades, this gravity-powered, carbon-free energy has flowed through rivers largely untouched. Currently, Nepal utilizes less than 10% of its realistic generating capacity, yet it has already begun a historic shift. In 2023, the country flipped from being a net electricity importer to a net exporter, selling power to India and even reaching Bangladesh via a landmark tripartite agreement.

Why AI Needs Nepal

While the world is pivoting to solar and wind, these sources are intermittent. AI data centers, the “brains” of the modern world, require 24/7 reliability. This is where Nepal’s hydropower excels:

Consistency: Unlike solar or wind, hydro runs at night, in winter, and under cloud cover, providing the constant power data centers demand.

Natural Cooling: Cooling accounts for 30% to 40% of a data center’s running costs. Nepal’s Himalayan climate offers natural ambient temperatures that drastically reduce these expenses, making every megawatt of electricity more efficient.

Economic Sovereignty: By building data centers domestically, Nepal can consume its surplus electricity on-site. This bypasses the need for massive international transmission lines and allows the country to generate direct revenue from the global AI industry without complex export negotiations.

A Turning Point for the Economy

For years, Nepal’s primary export hasn’t been energy, but its people. Over 2 million Nepalis work abroad, with remittances accounting for 26.9% of the GDP ($11 billion annually). While these funds have helped lower the poverty rate, they have also led to a significant “brain drain”.

The AI revolution offers a path toward a different future. The government is already moving to position Nepal as a regional hub:

  • National AI Policy: Approved in August 2025, providing a framework for cloud infrastructure and AI excellence centers.
  • Open Markets: In January 2025, Nepal opened its tech sector to 100% foreign direct investment for the first time.
  • Proof of Concept: A data center is currently being built in Chobar, Kathmandu, in collaboration with Google.

The Challenges Ahead

The potential is immense, but the road is not without obstacles. Nepal’s transition from a “Least Developed Country” (LDC) to a middle-income economy requires more than just natural resources. Critics point out that while the ambition is there, the regulatory framework is lagging; for instance, the first “certified” data center was essentially a container block used to bypass planning regulations.

To truly succeed, Nepal must:

Finish critical infrastructure: Complete the 400 kV transmission lines to India and build storage-type hydro plants for year-round generation.

Build rules before tenants: Establish robust zoning, environmental, and water-use laws to attract serious international players.

Two Versions of the Future

Nepal stands at a crossroads. In one version, the country leverages its “Himalayan battery” to become a tech hub, slowing the brain drain and providing skilled jobs for its youth. In the other, it remains fragile, graduating on paper while its best talent continues to leave for jobs elsewhere.

With a geography that places it between India, China, and Bangladesh – three of the world’s largest populations of AI users, Nepal has a rare comparative advantage. The world needs what Nepal has; now, it is up to Nepal to be ready when the world arrives.
